Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes
Total Time 50 minutes
Servings 1 loaf

  • 250g plain white flour
  • 250g plain whole meal flour
  • 100g porridge oats
  • 1 tsp of baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 25g butter cut into pieces
  • 500ml buttermilk

  • Preheat the oven to 200 degree F and dust a baking sheet with flour.
  • Mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl and then add the butter.
  •  Pour the buttermilk and mix it in nicely with a large spoon to completely blend with the flour to form nice dough. Shape the dough into a flat round loaf of 8 inches diameter.
  • Put the loaf on a baking sheet and draw a deep cross on the top. This helps the bread cook through.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes until the bottom of the loaf sounds hollow when it is tapped. If not ready, turn it upside down on the baking sheet and bake for a few more minutes.
  • Transfer this to a wire rack and cover it with a nice clean tea towel to keep the crust nice and soft.
  • Allow it to cool. While serving break into quarters and then break or cut each quarter into half to make into slices.
    Eat fresh.
